Capitalism, Contradictions, & Ideology

  • Lower East Side, Manhattan (map)

In this first New York salon, we will discuss the virtues and shortcomings of capitalism. Clara Mattei will inspire the conversation with a short talk, while most of the salon will be dedicated to a casual discussion among all the participants.

Clara Mattei is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research. She holds a PhD jointly from the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and Université de Strasbourg, as well as an MA in Philosophy from Pavia and a BA in Philosophy from Cambridge University. Her research explores a comparative view of post-World War I monetary and fiscal policies and she brings broad interdisciplinary engagements to her work in the history of economic thought and methodology.

Interested participants may read "History and Class Consciousness" (in particular "Reification and the Consciousness of the Proletariat") by Georg Lukacs and/or “Casino Moscow: A Tale of Greed and Adventure on Capitalism's Wildest Frontier” by Matthew Brzezinski, but this is by no means required or expected!

Location upon RSVP.
